United States Government Data Preservation

This guide describes efforts being made to preserve data required by Congress as part of its constitutional oversight & funding responsibilities.

Overview Labor Statistics

Notices like the one below announcing a reduction in data collected at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the cancellation of the 2025 3rd Quarter GDP at the Bureau of Economic Analysis have spurred data archivists to preserve labor statistics.

Notice regarding funding of the Current Population Survey: The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Census Bureau have paused plans to reduce the Current Population Survey (CPS) sample in January 2025, due to a provision in the recently passed continuing resolution that allows BLS to spend CPS funds at a faster rate.

Gross Domestic Product, 3rd Quarter 2025 is cancelled. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) announced that it had officially canceled releasing the advance estimate on gross domestic product (GDP) for the third quarter of 2025.

"The implications [of cancelled BEA data] will be to reduce the quality of all employment data available from public and private sources alike, which will have wide-ranging implications for many of us who depend on this data to make smarter workforce and economic development decisions," wrote William Cook of the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness.
