Overview Climate and Environment

Beginning in January 2025, thousands of climate and environmental datasets and resources have been removed from federal government websites according to the National Security Archive. The Trump administration has rapidly expanded the scope of its climate change information suppression with 70% more website changes in his first 100 days in office in 2025 than in 2017 (EDGI).

The following is a list of organizations and universities tracking and archiving those changes.

Burning Down the EPA
Building and expanding upon tactics of earlier EPA-hostile Administrations, the Zeldin-led EPA has launched the most damaging assault in the agency’s 54-year history. The report Burning Down the EPA: documenting the second Trump administration’s historic assault breaks down the tactics employed under Zeldin’s leadership and puts them in their historic context.

The CAFE Research Coordinating Center (RCC) Dataverse
Harvard Dataverse is an open-source generalist data repository where we are amassing a collection of commonly used climate and health data and linkages, including spatial data. This open collection is designed to support and enhance global research initiatives focused on understanding and mitigating the health impacts of environmental exposures.
Catalyst Cooperative
The data from U.S. Energy Information Administration, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), U.S. Dept. of Transportation, EPA Clean Air Markets Program, and U.S. Dept. of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration
are the backbone of much of these databases.
Data Rescue Project
The Data Rescue Project has archived 308 datasets from a variety of government departments, including the Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA, and U.S. Geological Survey.
Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI)
EDGI created the Federal Environmental Web Tracker to maintain a public record of changes made to environment-related federal government webpages.
The Impact Project: Data Transparency
The Impact Project provides objective, transparent, and open-source data to help explain how federal policies, funding, and workforce changes affect our communities. The Impact Map, shows the local impact of federal decisions. Given the limited availability of reliable data, The Impact Map will evolve as new data becomes available.
Open Environmental Data Project
A key focus of OEDP’s work centers on environmental data stewardship. In 2023, we built on our body of research to begin work on innovation spaces in this area through the Community Data Hubs pilot and Environmental Data Labs.
Silencing Science Tracker
The Silencing Science Tracker is a joint initiative of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law and the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund. It is intended to record reports of federal, state, and local government attempts to “silence science” since the November 2016 election.
Tracking Government Information
Tracking actions by the current administration that impact government information, such as: removed or modified documents and websites; language censorship; suspension or elimination of agencies, program, funding, or services; and collection of government data.
