Film and Television Research: Locating Articles

One of the largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Complete provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for nearly 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans nearly every area of academic study. Under the Subject Terms and Publications tabs, search under "film", "television" or other related keywords. A list of relevant results will be displayed. For the Subject Terms results, click on the box next to the term and that term will be added to your search. Search terms can be combined using Boolean operators such as and, or, and not under the New Search tab.

Communication & Mass Media Complete provides research in areas related to communication and mass media.
Under the Thesaurus and Publications tabs, search under "film", "television" or other related keywords. A list of relevant results will be displayed. For the Thesaurus results, click on the box next to the term and that term will be added to your search. Search terms can be combined using Boolean operators such as and, or, and not under the New Search tab.

JSTOR provides access to almost 200 titles in the Arts and Sciences collections (I, II, and III). Titles are indexed with the complete runs of journal titles up to the moving wall point. Under the Basic or Advanced Search options, search using the name of the film, television program, filmmaker, or subject you are researching. Limiting the search to the Film Studies discipline may be helpful. Under the Browse by Discipline option, the journals within this discipline may be browsed individually.

Use the name of the film, television program, filmmaker or related keyword when searching under the General Search tab. Boolean operators such as and, or, and not are quite useful when searching this way.

The New York Times Historical (1851-2013) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.
Under the Advanced Search tab, enter the film or program title "in quotes" and select Document title in the drop down box. Scroll down to Document type and select Article from the drop down box. Be sure the Sort results by box has Oldest (historical) first selected. You may have to scroll to the appropriate date range.

Project MUSE is an online resource providing nearly 250 scholarly journals from 40 publishers. Members of the Bentley community now have access to some of the most important academic resources in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Under the Advanced Article Search option, search using the name of the film, television program, filmmaker or related subject term. Limiting the search to the Film, Theater and Performing Arts discipline may be helpful. Users can browse journals within this discipline under the Browse Journals tab.
