Use of Language in This Guide and Library Resources

This class research guide was created to help you navigate library collections as well as other scholarly resources. The Bentley Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) to enable standardized searching across library holdings. LCSH were created in traditionally white spaces and some of these headings continue to use outdated language. Changes have to go through an extensive review, editorial and approval process and sometimes can only be changed by legislative action.

As you conduct your research, please be aware that there will be use of language that is othering, objectionable, triggering, and offensive or harmful to our users. The language may not align with current values about race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, ability/disability, and other identities and experiences or reflect the Bentley Library’s commitment to racial justice (see the library’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Statement).

If you discover harmful or offensive language in catalog records please contact us by sending an email to Lisa Curtin or the Library. We welcome your feedback, concerns, and questions.
